Just like humans, elephants have been known to cry when they are feeling sad or emotional. It was gathered that the elephant died after battling illness for a week.
It was gathered that the death might be related to the zoo's inability to provide a resident vet to care for the animals for one year.
As a result, the West Java Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has criticised the zoo for not assigning a vet to her.
‘Having a vet is mandatory,’ Sylvana Ratna, head of BKSDA, told Merdeka. ‘They haven’t had one for a year.’
Femke den Haas, from the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, called for clearer and tighter regulation of zoos in the country, and said Yani’s death is ‘really just the tip of the iceberg’.
The mayor of Bandung Ridwan Kamil visited Yani in her last few days, and posted photos on Instagram of himself tending to her.
‘If they don’t have the budget to manage, they should seek support,’ he said of the zoo afterwards.
