The organisation lamented that despite the FCTA receiving a N1.147trillion budget in 2024, residents of the community still lack access to clean drinking water.

MonITng, a civic technology platform, has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to take urgent action to resolve the water crisis in Shape Community, Dutse Ward, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.

The organisation lamented that despite the FCTA receiving a N1.147trillion budget in 2024, residents of the community still lack access to clean drinking water.

In a statement posted on X, MonITng lamented that over 1500 people, along with animals, are forced to rely on dirty, stagnant streams for their daily water needs.

The organisation said this exposed the residents to severe health risks, including cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea.

The platform highlighted that the only borehole in Shape Community broke down three years ago and has not been repaired, leaving the residents with no choice but to consume contaminated water.

The statement further criticised the neglect of the community, despite being located in Nigeria's capital city, and emphasised the ongoing challenges faced by the people.

"In 2024, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) received a ₦1.147 trillion budget, yet residents of Shape Community, Dutse Ward, Bwari Area Council, FCT, Abuja still lack access to clean drinking water,"
the statement reads.

"Over 1,500 people and animals depend on dirty, stagnant streams for survival, exposing them to serious health risks such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea."

MonITng attributed the crisis to poor infrastructure, misplaced priorities, lack of government intervention, and mismanagement of public funds.

The platform noted that the absence of clean water has left vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, suffering from waterborne diseases.

The organisation also pointed out that the lack of sanitation facilities is further exacerbating the hardships of the community, making daily life increasingly unbearable.

Despite repeated calls from residents for basic amenities, their concerns have gone unheard.

MonITng is calling for an immediate intervention from the FCTA to repair the broken water system, provide new boreholes, and improve sanitation in Shape Community.

The group’s statement concluded, “We demand urgent intervention NOW! The FCT Administration must prioritize the immediate provision of boreholes, repair of the broken water system, and improved sanitation. It’s time to act now!”
