A community in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has been attacked by armed herdsmen.

The attack left an unknown number of residents dead and injured.

The assailants reportedly invaded the community in the early hours of Monday, March 10, around 3:00 am, burning down several houses and displacing many residents.

A local resident, identified simply as Zaka, confirmed the incident, stating that the violence stemmed from a dispute over a mango tree.

“The fight started yesterday (Sunday) when a Fulani herdsman was cutting down a mango tree to feed his cattle. When community members approached him to stop, a heated argument ensued, and he allegedly stabbed one person to death,” Zaka said.

He added that in the early hours of Monday, the herdsman reportedly mobilized his kinsmen and launched an attack while residents were asleep.

“Many have been killed, and houses burnt,” Zaka said, calling on the authorities to intervene urgently.

In response to the initial killing on Sunday, some residents allegedly mobilized and set fire to Fulani huts in the area.

When contacted, the Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the attack but described available information as “still sketchy”.

The situation remains tense as residents call for swift government intervention to prevent further violence.
