Segun Dada, the Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, has slammed the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) over its rebuttal to the recent comment by Pastor Poju Oyemade.

While speaking in his church recently, Oyemade said;

‘’People are being programmed to hate their country which is ‘self hatred’. I was in America and I sat down with some Nigerians and they started. I told them that in Nigeria, a person will graduate as a medical doctor and spend N500, 000 throughout to become a doctor and they are working. You will graduate from John Hopkins as a doctor and you spend $2000, are you okay? Do you know how much money you will spend?

I said to them in Nigeria, if you tell a Nigerian to do two jobs he will curse your life out. He will come to America, wake up in the morning, do first job, do second job, do Uber…I said if they put the fraction of this energy they put here in their country, they would have blown. They kept quiet''

In a public statement addressed directly to Oyemade, NARD challenged his claim that medical doctors in Nigeria are trained on as little as N500,000. Citing a peer-reviewed study by Osoba et al. (2021), published in the Pan African Medical Journal, the association stated that the actual cost of training a doctor in Nigeria ranges between $21,000 and $51,000. This figure includes tuition, living expenses, and other related costs.

“It is easy for Pastors with access to tithes and offerings to seek care abroad, but their average Nigerian church member cannot,”
the statement read.

The association urged Oyemade to use his influence to advocate for systemic healthcare reforms instead of undermining the plight of healthcare workers.

Reacting to the NARD statement via his X handle, Segun asked the association to do better.

‘’Dear NARD, which Public university do students pay between $21,000 to $54,000

 In Nigeria to study medicine? This is just sad attempt at shifting the goal post.''
