In an interview with TVC News, Governor Alia criticized Obi for not following the proper channels, particularly for failing to inform him about his planned visit.

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has explained that his advice to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to postpone his visit to the state was based on protocol and security concerns.

In an interview with TVC News, Governor Alia criticized Obi for not following the proper channels, particularly for failing to inform him about his planned visit.

Alia also rejected Obi’s claim that he had attempted to contact him prior to the visit.
Obi had initially scheduled a visit to Benue, with plans to engage in courtesy calls and visit internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and health facilities.

However, the state government issued a statement urging against unscheduled visits, citing security concerns.

As a result, Obi cancelled his trip, expressing disappointment over what he saw as political interference in his charitable efforts.

Reacting to the situation, Governor Alia said, “I’m the one bearing the brunt and pain of the people in my state. Peter Obi is a very respected figure, having been a governor himself, and if you’re coming to someone else’s state, there are protocols to follow.”

Alia explained further, “If you’re coming to my state and your party is not aware of your visit, and I, the sitting governor, am not informed, then it becomes an issue.

“I have a duty to protect my people, especially those in the IDP camps. I need to be aware of your visit in order to provide security and prepare the IDPs for your arrival.”

The governor also refuted Obi’s claims of attempts to contact him, stating, “If he couldn’t reach me directly, there are other channels, including my Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), and my Principal Private Secretary (PPS).

“For him to claim that he reached out to my ADC is not accurate. That is not even the ADC’s responsibility.”

Governor Alia emphasized the importance of understanding the intent behind any visit, particularly to vulnerable populations.

“If you’re bringing food to the IDPs, I need to know what kind of aid you’re offering. There are protocols in place for a reason.

“You can’t just arrive from Abuja and head straight to an IDP camp without anyone being aware of your intentions. I need to ensure the safety of those people and understand the nature of the visit.”

The governor also cautioned against the politicization of the IDP situation, stating, “I am here with my people through their suffering and sorrow.

“People should not use the IDP crisis for political gain. I’m on the ground, and I know what the people need.”
