The president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta has come under heavy criticism after pictures showing him addressing Wajir residents of Kenya through a wire fence.

The incident happened while the president addressed residents at Wajir Stadium with a fence separating him and the audience during his recently concluded tour of the North Eastern counties.

Many Kenyans online did not take kindly to the pictures as some wondered if the president was afraid of his own electorates. Many Kenyans expressed dissatisfaction over the photographs which has prompted the State House digital director Dennis Itumbi to address the issue.

However, Itumbi took to Facebook on Monday to dismiss the critics.

He said:  “I have seen and read many requests for me to comment on a picture showing the President addressing citizens through what looks like a fence barrier. The problem is that those circulating that propaganda rarely leave their desks in Nairobi or even google from their desks.

“Most Stadiums in Kenya are constructed with a fence around the dias. From Nyayo Stadium, to Embu, Kisumu, Mombasa, Kinoru and even Afraha Stadium,” said Mr Itumbi.

However, Itumbi's explanation was met with harsh criticism as many argued that the president should have opted to setup his podium in the pitch areas where he could be seen and accessible without any barriers coming between him and the people.

One commenter, Walter Atito Onyango attached a photo of a past presidential event posing, showing that the president didn't do well by talking to his people through a wire fence. Atito wrote: “Wapi fence Hapa Nanyuki stadium? Defending the indefensible…”
