Ismail Ahmed, a 27-year-old man, lost his life after becoming trapped in an abandoned mining pit while taking shelter from a heavy downpour in Pangu Village, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was revealed in a post by security analyst, Zagazola Makama on X on Sunday.

According to the post, Ahmed  was washing clothes by a nearby stream when the rain began.

“In an attempt to escape the downpour, he took shelter in a disused mining pit that was once used by illegal gold miners.

“Unfortunately, the loose soil around the pit collapsed due to the rainfall, trapping him inside,”
Makama wrote.

Family members and local residents quickly responded and managed to pull Ahmed out of the pit.

He was rushed to Kwali General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The post further revealed that the family declined an autopsy and opted for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Local authorities and residents have since issued warnings, urging the community to avoid abandoned mining sites and other unsafe locations, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent similar tragedies.
