The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
MASSOB said Tinubu should promote human rights by releasing Kanu to commemorate the 2025 June 12 Democracy Day.
MASSOB, in a statement by its leader, Uchenna Madu, on Tuesday, said that releasing Kanu would contribute significantly to national healing and unity, while also fostering better relations between the federal government and various ethnic groups, particularly in the Southeast.
Madu pointed out that the appeal is anchored on key democratic values and principles of the rule of law.
“MASSOB believes that releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will open the door for meaningful dialogue aimed at addressing the long-standing grievances of the southeastern region, especially regarding self-determination and calls for greater autonomy,” Madu said.
According to him, the appeal comes at a symbolic moment in Nigeria’s history of June 12— a date that embodies the spirit of democracy and the values of freedom, justice, and equity.
“Our call for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release echoes the sentiments of many individuals and organisations across Igbo land, Nigeria, and the global community who view his release as a critical step toward resolving broader political and social challenges,” the statement read.
The Movement stressed that the appeal reflects a wider aspiration for justice and the recognition of the rights of the Biafran people within the Nigerian federation.
