Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recent violence that occurred during Auchi Polytechnic's Student Union Government election in Edo State.

Recall that the attack led to the d3ath of two students and numerous injuries.

In a statement posted on his X account on Monday, July 7, Obi criticised Nigeria's increasing lawlessness and linked the chaos during the student election to a broader breakdown in leadership and public behaviour.

‘’The question is ‘’Where did they learn it from?''

Obi accused those in the political elite of setting poor examples that the younger generation has since imitated.

‘’When we choose to conduct both our public and personal lives with bad behaviour and rascality, we normalise bad behaviour, lawlessness, and criminality.

When we have chosen to ‘fight, snatch it, grab it, and run with it,’ how can we expect our children to do it rightly and democratically when they have learned from us?” he questioned.

Obi called the incident "not just disgraceful," but a "national indictment," and he called on political leaders to assume responsibility for reversing the trend by bringing back order, civility, and moral principles to society.

“It is now up to us, the leaders, to learn how to restore civility, order, and core values in our society by ensuring that our character and behaviour reflect the change we seek in our society,” he said.
