Governor Henry Dickson of Bayelsa state has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to approach the Niger Delta with caution as he believes military approach will not calm the situation.

The militant group - Niger Delta Avengers has been wrecking havoc over what it described as marginalization of its people by the federal government. In a bid to tackle the issue, Buhari has sent the army to the region to tackle the issue but nothing has come out of it since as the militants have continued to bomb oil pipelines across the region.

"The way forward is for all stakeholders to discuss the issues and the need for the federal government to tread with caution and not adopt a military approach as a means to solve the problem," Bayelsa state governor Henry Dickson said in a statement on Wednesday, a day after meeting executives from oil majors. The meeting was also attended by security agencies.

"No one person can protect the assets in the remote areas of the region. I, therefore, call on those involved in this act of criminality and brigandage to stop forthwith," he added.

The effect of the bombing of the pipelines has seen Nigeria witness its lowest production in 20 years.
