A man identified as Mr. Zape Upaa was reportedly assaulted by enraged residents of the Ukpiam community in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, after he allegedly tried to downplay a deadly attack carried out by armed herdsmen.
Sources said Zape was confronted and beaten while trying to record videos aimed at discrediting reports of the overnight attack that left the community shaken.
The villagers, who were still reeling from the violence, reportedly descended on him in anger.
Pictorial evidence circulating online shows Zape with visible injuries, confirming the assault.
Witnesses say the incident occurred in broad daylight, drawing the attention of other residents.
“He was trying to do a video to say nothing happened here. People got angry and attacked him,” one local said.
Ukpiam, like many other communities in Benue, has suffered repeated attacks from suspected armed herders, prompting calls for increased security presence in the area.
Upaa was rescued by well meaning local rushed to a Makurdi hospital for treatment of injuries sustained from the attack.
