On Tuesday afternoon, no fewer than three teenagers drowned in a river near Durum village in Bauchi State shortly after participating in mining activities.

The incident was shared on Wednesday by security analyst, Zagazola Makama in a post on X.

The victims, Habibu Mohammed and Abubakar Mohammed, both 16 years old, and 14-year-old Zalani Suleiman had joined a group of boys who went scavenging for mineral deposits around Jinkiri village, close to the Durum mining site.

“After mining, the three boys reportedly left the group and went to swim in a nearby river, a common activity among local youths during hot weather. Unfortunately, they never came out alive,” Makama wrote.

According to Malam Yakubu Ahmad, the hamlet head of Jinkiri, the boys were later found unconscious in the water and were rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi. Doctors confirmed they were dead on arrival.

“They usually came around here for mining and would go swimming after. But this time, things went wrong. We are heartbroken,”
Ahmad said.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that officers were quickly deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.

The bodies were recovered and examined, with no signs of violence or foul play observed.
