A 25-year-old labourer has lost his life after a building foundation collapsed at an excavation site inside Radio House, Area 8, Garki, Abuja.

A statement released on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 by Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs for the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), said the incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Monday.
 
She said a section of the foundation wall collapsed while laborers were excavating approximately seven feet below ground level.
 
Mr. Monday Adie, the head of the FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team, confirmed the incident, stating that two workers were trapped under the rubble. 
 
“One of the victims was rescued alive, but unfortunately, the other was fatally injured,” he explained.
 
Adie added that the Federal Fire Service responded quickly after receiving a distress call at about 5:50 p.m. and immediately mobilized personnel for the rescue operation.
 
In his reaction, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, described the incident as avoidable, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with safety standards at construction sites.
 
“This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of adherence to safety regulations and the use of qualified professionals in the building sector,” Mohammed said. “Developers must shun quacks to prevent needless loss of lives.”
 
He also urged residents to promptly report emergencies by using the toll-free number 112, assuring that the department remains committed to a quick disaster response across the territory.
