University Workers Extend Strike Ultimatum By Two Weeks

The unions stated that the decision to extend the ultimatum followed a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19.

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have given an update concerning its ongong strike.

According to SSANU and NASU, it has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by another two weeks.

Recall that the two unions had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government over unresolved welfare concerns, threatening a nationwide shutdown if their demands were not met.

In a joint letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions faulted the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances to staff of universities, non-payment of outstanding allowances, among others.”

Ibrahim said the JAC had, in June, written to the Federal Government on the lingering labour issues, a move that led to a meeting with the Minister of Education on July 4, 2025.

In a new correspondence to their chapters nationwide on Tuesday, the unions stated that the decision to extend the ultimatum followed a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19.

“The leadership of JAC of NASU and SSANU, arising from a meeting held on Monday, 22nd September, 2025, decided to keep you updated on the current status of our agitations forwarded for resolution to the Federal Government,” the letter read.

The unions explained that the consultative meeting was attended by top government officials, including the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), directors from the Ministries of Education and Labour, as well as other key stakeholders.

“The meeting’s deliberations focused on our demands, but concrete resolutions of our requests have not been met, necessitating the continuation of discussions,” the JAC said.

The letter noted that the extension was to give the government another opportunity to act.

“In view of this, the JAC of NASU and SSANU has resolved to extend the ultimatum by an additional two weeks, effective today. This extension provides the government with an opportunity to initiate the requisite processes to address our demands.

“If the government fails to do the needful within this extended period, the JAC will summarily proceed with a series of legitimate industrial actions upon expiration of the extension,” the unions warned.
