Gospel singer Tim Godfrey has lamented the fate of gospel singers in Nigeria.

He condemned the poor treatment gospel singers get from some churches in Nigeria.

This is as he revealed that he was once paid with food items, including yams and even a live chicken, for performing

In a clip shared on X, the musician expressed frustration over how undervalued gospel performers are, saying the treatment makes it increasingly difficult for him to perform in Nigeria.

“I don’t like coming. Okay, I come to Nigeria, but it has become difficult because of how artists are being treated so badly,” Godfrey said.

He recounted being given unusual forms of payment, questioning the fairness of such practices. “I have collected tubers of yams as honorarium. I have collected a full, alive, living, breathing chicken as honorarium,” he said, visibly upset.

The singer stressed that such compensation makes it impossible for artists to cover basic expenses like school fees, rent, or property, calling it “absolutely unfair.”

Godfrey’s comments have sparked widespread debate on social media, with fans and fellow musicians weighing in on whether gospel performances should ever be monetised and how artists should be treated within ministry settings.
