Afrobeats Artists In The Diaspora Face Double Struggle – Famous Singer, Folucious FC Says

Foluwasegun Sanni, the Canada-based Nigerian Afrobeats artist, who is popularly known as Folucious FC, has highlighted the unique challenges African artists in the diaspora face while trying to establish themselves in the global Afrobeats industry.

In an exclusive interview, the fast-rising Afrofusion star described the experience as a “double struggle” — maintaining authenticity to African roots while adapting to the dynamics of a foreign music industry.

“The Afrobeat sound is global now, but not every artist in the diaspora gets equal visibility,” Folucious FC said. “Back home, you’re sometimes seen as too foreign, while abroad, people don’t fully grasp the depth of where the music comes from. It’s a balancing act that takes consistency and real passion.”

The singer, whose sound fuses Afrobeats, hip-hop, and soul, lamented the scarcity of live performance opportunities, high production costs, and limited label representation for African creatives abroad. However, he remains optimistic, noting that digital platforms have opened new pathways for visibility and connection.

“Technology has made it possible for us to reach fans in Lagos, Accra, London, or Toronto with just one post. Once the music is real, people will feel it anywhere,” he added.

Having grown up in Nigeria before relocating to Canada, Folucious FC said his artistry reflects a blend of Lagos street grit and North American polish. His forthcoming project, expected later this year, will further explore this fusion.

“My journey is about representing every African artist abroad trying to be heard. We may be far from home, but Afrobeat lives in us. It’s our heartbeat,” he said.
