Akpabio noted that Nigerians were eager to hear the Senate’s position but stressed that it would be premature to make any pronouncement.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied making comments against US President Donald Trump.

He made the clarification on Tuesday during plenary.

He also cautioned people over the ongoing controversy surrounding allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, saying the Senate would not rush to take a position until it had been properly briefed by the federal government.

The issue arose after U.S. President Donald Trump declared Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” accusing the government of allowing the persecution of Christians. Trump’s remarks were followed by a post from U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, who said his department was “preparing for action.”

Responding during plenary, Akpabio noted that Nigerians were eager to hear the Senate’s position but stressed that it would be premature to make any pronouncement without official clarification from the Tinubu administration.

“Nigerians want us to take a position. But we won’t take a position on that until we know what the government is doing about it,” Akpabio said.

He revealed that social media users had been tagging and urging him to personally reply to Trump’s remarks but maintained that such responses must follow proper legislative procedure.

“Who am I to reply Trump?” Akpabio asked rhetorically, adding that the Senate would deliberate on the issue once it is formally presented before the chamber.

His comment, however, drew a quick reaction from Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who urged Akpabio not to be hesitant to speak on behalf of the nation.

“We’re not afraid. Don’t be scared. I am a Nigerian. I am a parliamentarian. Nigeria is a sovereign nation,” Barau said.

Akpabio later emphasized that Trump’s statement does not reflect the realities in Nigeria, insisting that the country remains united and peaceful despite its challenges.

“All we need is peace,” he stated, cautioning individuals and groups who spread misleading narratives abroad that suggest Christians and Muslims are at war in Nigeria.

He also warned against the spread of fake news and urged security agencies to monitor social media more closely.

“This is necessary so that their breaking news doesn’t break Nigeria,” Akpabio added.
