Duncan Mighty’s claims sparked mixed reactions, with many countering him for “overemphasising” Port Harcourt and its artistes’ influences on Afrobeats.

Duncan Mighty, the popular Nigerian singer, has claimed that he and other artists from Port Harcourt laid the foundation for today's Afrobeats.

Speaking in a recent interview with Hip TV, Duncan Mighty explained that artists from Port Harcourt such as himself, Timaya, Burna Boy and Omah Lay have influenced the Afrobeats scene in a way that the slags and sounds of the city have been incorporated into the genre.

“In almost every Afrobeats song today you can hear the Port Harcourt influence, especially the Ikwerri slangs.

“You can’t hear any Afrobeats song today and you will not hear a spice of Port Harcourt. Almost every Afrobeats song today has the flavour of Port Harcourt sound.

“I, Burna Boy, Timaya, Omah Lay and Port Harcourt sound built the foundation of today’s Afrobeats,”
he claimed.
