Nigerian TikTok creator, _iyiola has joined numerous Nigerians in voicing concern over the massive fire that gutted the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building on Lagos Island, drawing attention to the frequent recurrence of such incidents in the commercial district.
In a viral video, she shared her shock and frustration over the blaze, which destroyed millions of naira worth of goods and put traders at risk.
She said, "Even people at that building, they didn't even carry their goods out because it was not serious. And the other firefighter services, they were already around. They were not even doing anything."
She added that she was grateful to have left her own shop earlier, following her mother’s advice, avoiding potential losses.
"What of those people that are borrowing money from the bank just to buy goods in their shop?" she lamented, reflecting on the heavy impact on traders.
The fire, which started around 4:40 p.m. on December 24, 2025, engulfed the multi-storey plaza housing clothing warehouses and offices. Emergency responders battled the blaze overnight, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirming no fatalities.
Her commentary has resonated online, fueling discussions on the need for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations in Lagos markets and high-rise buildings, as investigations into the cause continue.
