The Ogun State Police Command has said a road accident involving Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua was caused by a tyre burst, leading to the de@ths of two members of his team.
The incident occurred on Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State, when a Lexus SUV conveying the renowned boxer collided with a stationary truck.
Joshua, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Police Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) said preliminary investigations showed that the vehicle was travelling from Lagos towards Sagamu when it “experienced a tyre burst due to excessive speed” and subsequently “lost control.”
Akinbiyi said Joshua and the driver were rescued from the wreckage and taken to a hospital in Sagamu for medical treatment.
He added that Joshua was later confirmed to be in a stable condition.
“The two other passengers, Mr Sina Ghami and Mr Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, were pronounced de@d at the scene,” Akinbiyi said.
Matchroom Boxing, Joshua’s promotional company, identified the deceased as close friends and key members of the boxer’s team.
In a statement, the company said Joshua was taken to hospital for “checks and treatment” and would remain under observation.
“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected, and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
Chairman of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, paid tribute to the victims, describing them as “two great men.”
“Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone,” Hearn said.
