A Nigerian woman has expressed concern after alleging that some vendors are now imposing so-called “VAT” charges on purchases, a practice she describes as illegal and misleading.
In a video making the rounds online, the woman questioned why sellers are collecting tax directly from buyers without any clarity or official backing.
According to her, a customer who bought an item worth about ₦3 million was asked to pay an extra ₦250,000–₦300,000 as VAT. Another buyer who made a ₦2.7 million purchase was reportedly told to add between ₦200,000 and ₦250,000 as tax.
She also shared her own experience, saying that after buying an item worth over ₦400,000, she was informed she would still be charged VAT even though more than half of her payment was made in cash.
Visibly upset, the lady questioned whether this is what the government intended with taxation policies, asking if Nigerians are now expected to pay tax on every single purchase while still being taxed in other areas.
She called on the government to clarify the situation and urged authorities to address what she described as unchecked and arbitrary tax collection by individuals.
