First Set Of AAU Students Arrested By The Police Over Ekpoma Protest Have Been Released (Photos)

Following the public outcry for their release, the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, ordered the release of ‘’genuine students' amongst the arrested protesters.

The first group of Ambrose Alli University students arrested during last weekend’s anti-kidnapping protest in Ekpoma, Edo State, has been released following approval from Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Recall that 52 persons were arrested by the police last weekend after the protest against the increasing spate of k!dnapping and insecurity in the community turned into a violent riot as some of the protesters vandalized properties and looted shops in the community. 

Following the arrest, there was a public outcry with claims that most of the persons arrested were students of the Ambrose ALli University. It was alleged that thepolice stormed the school hostel and summarily arrested some of the students.

Following the public outcry for their release, the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, ordered the release of ‘’genuine students' amongst the arrested protesters.

Last night, seven of the AAU students who were among those arrested were released. The state government says others still in custody will be released in due course.
