Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised the gallantry and resilience of the Super Eagles despite their defeat to Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals.
Obi, in a statement via his 𝕏 account, said the players showed strength against all odds and fought to the very end.
He praised the Super Eagles, noting that they held their heads high despite losing the game and reminded them that they still have the chance to clinch a third-place medal in the tournament.
“Dearest gallant Super Eagles, it was a battle well fought and heads were not bowed.
“Thank you for a beautiful 120 minutes of incredible play. You showed your strength and prowess against all odds.
“The journey is not over. You have made the nation proud. Keep your heads high, the Eagle never stops soaring.
“There is another stage, let’s go get that medal.
“You have done well.-PO,” he wrote.
Recall that Morocco booked their place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after knocking Nigeria out 4-2 on penalties following a tense 0-0 draw that stretched into extra time.
The semi-final match, officiated by Ghanaian referee, Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, was a battle of patience and defensive discipline, with both sides cancelling each other out over 120 minutes.
Nigeria, driven by the attacking threat of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, had spells of possession but could not find a breakthrough against a well-organised Moroccan back line.
Morocco, marshalled by captain Achraf Hakimi, carried the greater goal threat in open play. Stanley Nwabali was called into action several times, notably denying Noussair Mazraoui and Abde Ezzalzouli, while Bono remained alert at the other end to keep out Lookman’s first-half effort.
