The highly anticipated semi-final clash ended 0-0 after extra time, before Morocco defeated Nigeria 4-2 on penalties, consigning the Super Eagles to the third-place playoff.
Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator Ekene Clinton Egbuna, widely known as KlintonCOD, has sparked fresh controversy on social media after posting a video featuring Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea, who officiated the controversial AFCON semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco on Wednesday night.
The video, posted on đ on Thursday, reignited anger among Nigerian football fans still reeling from the Super Eaglesâ painful exit from the tournament.
The highly anticipated semi-final clash ended 0-0 after extra time, before Morocco defeated Nigeria 4-2 on penalties, consigning the Super Eagles to the third-place playoff.
While the match itself was closely contested, the officiating by Laryea dominated post-match discussions, with many Nigerians accusing the referee of making questionable decisions that allegedly favoured Morocco.
Even before kickoff, some Nigerian supporters had expressed unease over Laryeaâs appointment, citing the long-standing rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana and raising fears of possible bias.
Those concerns resurfaced during the game as several calls went against the Super Eagles, further fuelling frustration among fans.
One decision that particularly angered Nigerian supporters was the yellow card shown to defender Calvin Bassey, a booking that ruled him out of Nigeriaâs next match due to suspension.
Many fans described the caution as harsh and unnecessary, especially given the high stakes of the semi-final encounter.
Earlier, it was reported that Daniel Nii Laryeaâs Instagram account had gone offline following a wave of backlash from Nigerian fans after the defeat.
Frustrated supporters were said to have traced the refereeâs social media handles and mass-reported the accounts, leading to the disappearance of his Instagram page as of the last check.
Against this tense backdrop, KlintonCODâs decision to share a video featuring the referee further inflamed emotions online.
Although the comedian did not directly comment on the officiating in the clip, many Nigerians interpreted the post as insensitive, given the lingering anger over the refereeâs performance.
Social media users flooded the comment section with criticism, accusing KlintonCOD of trivialising a painful national moment.
