A really old has inflicted horrible and fatal injuries on his wife as he tried to take his car out of his driveway into the road.
The scene of the accident
The man's wife, an 89-year-old woman has died after she was accidentally run over by her elderly husband as he reversed their car off the drive.
Neighbours said Sybil Bush had been helping direct her husband Kenneth, 91, out of the driveway of their home in Horncastle, Lincolnshire when tragedy struck at 12.15pm on Sunday.
According to Daily Mail, Mr Bush is believed to have accidentally hit the accelerator as he tried to pull into the road and drove into his wife, dragging her underneath the Nissan Note.
Emergency services rushed to the scene outside the couple's £300,000 Victorian end-of-terrace property but the pensioner was later pronounced dead.
Lincolnshire Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and are now appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
Neighbours said heartbroken Mr Bush had been left 'shattered' after the death of his wife, who was described as being 'his entire world, his everything.'
They said Mr Bush had relied on Mrs Bush to help him get off their driveway every time they went out as he had a bad neck and struggled to look behind him.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: 'For a few years now Sybil would help Ken pull into the road as he had trouble looking behind him.
'He had a bad neck so he needed her to direct him onto Stanhope Road as she checked for any traffic coming.
'He's either mistook the accelerator for the break, or his foot has slipped and he has just hit his wife who was dragged under the car and left on the pavement.
'My son-in-law saw said Ken was shaking and crying when he got out of the car and just kept saying "no, no, no."
'You can't imagine what he saw and what he went through. They were a beautiful couple. Sybil was his entire world and his absolute everything.
'They were still looking like a couple of teenagers in love. They must have been married for over 60 years, something like that. He will be shattered. I don't think he will ever get over this. How could you really?'
Charlie King, 53, a heating engineer, who lives nearby, said he had returned home after running a 10k race to find the emergency services at the couple's home.
'When I returned I saw the air ambulance taking off,' he said. 'I spoke to the police and they said they could not tell me exactly what had happened but said that a very serious accident had taken place.
'Stanhope Road is not especially busy. One or two go a bit fast but it is not really a road where you would expect this to happen.'
Alan Lockwood, 64, who lives in the centre of Horncastle, was shocked to hear of the fatality.
He said: 'I was just walking my dog as I had come back from visiting relatives.
'I am shocked and surprised to hear what has happened because it is normally quite a safe road as people take care to pass all of the parked cars.
'It seems very, very sad that someone has lost their life. It is a shame this has happened.'
