Former lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has cautioned that social media and artificial intelligence (AI) are posing significant threats to the education and discipline of children in the present generation.
In a post on X on Monday, Sani described social media as the “biggest distraction” facing young people today, noting that many parents are worried about the growing influence of mobile phones and online platforms on their children.
He referenced recent moves by countries such as Australia, which has banned children under 16 from accessing social media, as well as discussions in France and Britain on similar measures.
According to him, the rise of artificial intelligence has further worsened the situation, stressing that urgent steps must be taken to “rescue” young people from harmful digital influences.
Sani said: “Without doubt, the social media is the biggest distraction to the education and discipline of the children of this generation.
“Australia has banned the under 16s from the social media, France and Britain are thinking of doing the same. Nowadays, every parent has a story to tell about the influence of phones and the social media on their kids.
“AI further complicates the problem. We have a monster to deal with. Its not so easy, but the young must be rescued.”
