Since the incident and the subsequent arrest of suspected coup plotters, several officers have reportedly adopted a low-profile posture, avoiding gatherings and conversations that could draw suspicion.
Tension has swept through senior military officers nationwide following the failed coup attempt against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in September 2026.
Since the incident and the subsequent arrest of suspected coup plotters, several officers have reportedly adopted a low-profile posture, avoiding gatherings and conversations that could draw suspicion.
Military sources who spoke with The Leadership on condition of anonymity said that since the coup attempt, open discussion of sensitive political matters, especially any reference to military takeovers, has become off-limits.
“It is more or less a taboo to talk about a coup, especially among officers. So, it is as if nothing happened,” a senior source said.
Another officer added that no formal directive was issued, but personnel are expected to exercise extreme caution.
“It’s in our DNA; you don’t need to be told to avoid discussions around a coup,” the source said.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed the failed coup in a statement issued on January 26, 2026, noting that those implicated will soon face trial.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that a comprehensive investigation into the incident had been concluded, and the findings forwarded to military authorities.
“Those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act.
“This ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process,” Uba said.
Although Uba did not disclose the number of officers involved, unofficial reports suggest over 40 personnel were subjected to the internal probe.
The Defence Headquarters had earlier, in October 2025, confirmed the arrest of 16 military officers over alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.
According to Uba, the internal investigation adhered strictly to established military protocols and focused on upholding discipline, professionalism, and constitutional loyalty within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
“The findings have identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the AFN,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that the measures being taken are strictly disciplinary and not politically motivated.
Despite the growing unease within military circles, the Defence Headquarters maintained that the AFN remains committed to constitutional governance and national stability.
“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement added.
