The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced that Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos will be shut down beginning in March 2026.

The closure will last for about 22 months as the terminal undergoes major rehabilitation and expansion works.

During the closure, a temporary departure hall covering 8,000 square metres will handle international passengers.

This facility is almost complete and will host operations for five to six international airlines at the start.

Passengers are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual as airlines move to the temporary terminal.

International arrivals and cargo services will continue using other sections of the airport.

The upgrade project will also include a new skywalk connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, improvements to the road network, and larger apron space to accommodate wide-body aircraft.

The works are designed to increase capacity and modernize infrastructure at one of Nigeria’s busiest airports while ensuring passengers have a smoother travel experience.
