According to Adekeye, El-Rufai declined to accompany the operatives because they did not present a formal invitation, after which they allegedly seized his passport from an aide.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai, a former Kaduna State Governor, told security officials at an airport on Thursday that they should provide a formal letter if they wish to invite him for questioning.

The remark followed an earlier allegation by Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai’s media adviser, who claimed that security agents attempted to arrest the former governor upon his arrival on a flight from Cairo.

According to Adekeye, El-Rufai declined to accompany the operatives because they did not present a formal invitation, after which they allegedly seized his passport from an aide.

The development comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the former governor.

Earlier, Tori News reported that El-Rufai had alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government might be planning to arrest him.

El-Rufai, now a prominent figure in the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the claim during an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday.

In recent weeks, he has intensified criticism of the Tinubu administration and the leadership of the APC, the party under which he served as Kaduna State governor for eight years.

During the interview, El-Rufai also alleged that some politicians are being pressured either to defect to the ruling APC or remain within its ranks, amid ongoing political realignments.
