The State Commandant, Igbalawole Sotiyo, disclosed that the case was reported after a customer observed that his prepaid meter developed a fault which prevented him from loading electricity recharge units.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two suspects for alleged conspiracy, meter tampering, and illegal electricity vending in Osun State.

The spokesperson for the corps in the state, ASCI Kehinde Adeleke, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 said the suspects, identified as Babatunde (46) and Akin (40), were arrested following a complaint linked to fraudulent activities involving a prepaid electricity meter belonging to a customer of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The State Commandant, Igbalawole Sotiyo, disclosed that the case was reported after a customer observed that his prepaid meter developed a fault which prevented him from loading electricity recharge units.

The customer subsequently contacted an electrician, Babatunde, who assured him that the issue would be resolved.

According to the Commandant, investigations revealed that Babatunde later discovered he could not fix the meter and subsequently engaged the services of one Akin, a former staff of IBEDC in the state

In his confessional statement, Babatunde admitted that the meter was unlawfully formatted, and 200 units of electricity were made to reflect on the meter without payment.

The illegal act was later detected by IBEDC during routine monitoring, prompting the company to report the matter to NSCDC Osun State Command for further investigation and necessary action.

Commandant Sotiyo warned electricians and other technical service providers against engaging in any form of meter tampering, illegal electricity vending or acts capable of sabotaging the nation’s critical infrastructure.

He emphasized that the Corps remains committed to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, including power installations and will not hesitate to prosecute offenders.

He further assured members of the public that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Command also urged residents to report suspicious activities relating to electricity meters and other public infrastructure to the nearest NSCDC office.
