A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), John Nwosu, has condemned the gunmen’s attack on former presidential candidate Peter Obi in Edo State, describing it as disturbing, unacceptable, and a grave threat to democratic principles.

Armed thugs shot at Peter Obi and some chieftains of the ADC during the formal defection of Olumide Akpata into the party in Benin City, Edo State.

Nwosu, the party’s governorship candidate in the November election in Anambra State, in a statement issued on Tuesday, asserted that an attack on Peter Obi is an attack on all well-meaning Nigerians who believe in peace and civility.

He further urged relevant security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to investigate the attack, unearth the perpetrators, and ensure that they are brought to justice.

He said, “Let it be clearly stated: an attack on Peter Obi is an attack on all well-meaning Nigerians who believe in peace, civility, and the democratic right of every citizen to participate freely in the political process.

“This development is disheartening, condemnable and poses a serious threat to the principles that underpin our democracy.

“Nigeria must rise above violence and embrace a political culture rooted in maturity, tolerance, and respect for democratic values.

“Our politics must be devoid of bitterness, intimidation, and violence. Democracy thrives on healthy competition of ideas, constructive engagement, and mutual respect, not aggression or lawlessness.

“I call on the relevant security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to investigate this incident, unearth the perpetrators, and ensure that they are brought to justice.

“Accountability is critical to preventing future occurrences and restoring public confidence, and political differences must never degenerate into acts that endanger lives or undermine national stability.”
