Malami, alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and son, Abdulaziz, is facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has thanked his family, political associates, and supporters for standing by him after his release from custody in connection with alleged corruption charges.
Malami, alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and son, Abdulaziz, is facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former minister, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was initially remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre before being rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on January 19 shortly after his release.
He had earlier accused the DSS of denying him access to his family and legal team while in custody.
On February 27, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Malami and his son bail in the sum of ₦200 million each over alleged terrorism-related offences.
In a message issued through his media aide, Mohammed Doka, and shared on his Facebook page, Malami described his ordeal as a “difficult period.”
“I extend my profound and heartfelt gratitude to my family, friends, political associates, and countless well-meaning Nigerians who stood firm with me,” he said.
He noted that their support helped him withstand what he described as “media trials, sensational narratives, and prejudgment.”
Malami also acknowledged several prominent political figures for their support, including former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar; ex-Kaduna governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Others he mentioned include former Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal, as well as Kashim Imam, Lawal Batagarawa, Lauretta Onochie, and Bolaji Abdullahi.
He described their interventions as courageous and principled.
Despite regaining his freedom, Malami said his focus has shifted to broader national issues, urging Nigerians to unite in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
“The struggle for justice, accountability, and national redemption is only just beginning,” he stated.
He warned that Nigeria was facing a critical moment, calling for courageous leadership and active citizen participation.
Malami urged Nigerians to remain resolute in defending democratic values.
“Let it be clearly understood that the struggle is just beginning… No retreat, no surrender,” he added.
