Following a police operation that resulted in the arrest of six suspects over an alleged plot targeting important government institutions, residents of Akure, the capital of Ondo State, may have avoided a significant security problem.

Adebowale Lawal, the state's commissioner of police, told reporters on Thursday that the operation was conducted on April 15, 2026, based on reliable information about a suspected criminal network that operated in several states.

He claimed that officers responded quickly to the information, traveling to the designated spot where the suspects were captured before an attack could be launched. Items thought to be parts of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other materials were found during a search of a home in the Oke-Odu neighborhood of Akure.

The suspects were identified as Adekunle Prosper (56), Ojo Olumide (39), Tope Kolawole (40), Ahmed Salihu (40), Bolaji Adebowale (46), and Gbadebo Abidemi (43).

According to the police, preliminary findings suggest the group may have been assembling explosive devices intended for use at strategic locations. Officers also said a document outlining potential targets was recovered, indicating a possible coordinated plan.

Given that residential premises are occasionally utilized for illegal activities, Lawal recommended landlords and property managers to exercise caution and do appropriate background checks on tenants.

During a raid in Ondo Town, police in Ondo State also detained ten people they believed to be participating in cult-related activities. Oluwatosin Temitope, a suspected leader who was previously listed as sought in relation to violent episodes, is one of those apprehended.

According to police, he is being looked into in relation to two incidents at a pub in 2025 and a gunshot in March 2026 that involved a victim known as "Primo.

"Among the things found in the group are a gun, cutlasses, a battle axe, insignia, and charms. Authorities said the suspects are believed to be linked to confraternities such as Aiye, Eiye, and Alora.

The Commissioner commended officers for the operation, emphasising the importance of intelligence-led policing in addressing evolving security challenges. He assured residents of the Command’s continued commitment to protecting lives and property.

After investigations are finished, the suspects are still being held and are anticipated to face charges in court. Additionally, he asked the public to remain vigilant and provide law enforcement with pertinent and timely information.
