During an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 16, 2026, President Donald Trump described the ongoing US-led war with Iran as a "little diversion," downplaying the conflict's scale despite growing public disapproval and economic strain.

During his second term in office, President Donald Trump declared on Thursday that the US war with Iran was a "little diversion" due to the conflict's low popularity among Americans, according to recent polling.

The 79-year-old president boasted about his economic performance since taking office again in 2025 during an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, highlighting his "no tax on tips" legislation from the significant tax reform bill passed last year.

"During my first term, we had the best economy in our nation's history. And now we're blowing it out.Trump addressed the assembly of supporters, "And despite our little diversion to the lovely country of Iran, lovely place."

“But we had to do that, because otherwise, bad things could happen, the really bad thing,” he continued, referencing Iran’s apparent nuclear potential.

An Ipsos poll conducted last weekend found 51 percent of the more than 1,000 respondents thought the Iran war was not worth the costs associated with it. Less than a quarter of respondents, 24 percent, said the opposite.

Another recent Quinnipiac University survey released on Wednesday revealed 65 percent of US voters blame Trump for the recent rise in gas prices prompted by the Strait of Hormuz closing since the start of the Iran war.

According to the same survey, 58% of voters disapproved of Trump's handling of the Iranian crisis, while only 36% agreed.
