The kidnapping of travelers, including Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) candidates, in Otukpo has angered and alarmed Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The governor condemned the occurrence, calling it a horrible act carried out by criminal elements, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula. He pointed out that assaulting innocent people—particularly students preparing for exams—violates fundamental human rights and disturbs public order.

Governor Alia reassured residents, particularly families of the victims, that security operatives have already been deployed and are intensifying efforts to track down those responsible. “Tactical teams have been fully mobilised, and coordinated, search-and-rescue operations are also ongoing to ensure the safe return of all abducted persons”, he assured.

The governor reiterated his earlier directive for security forces to root out terrorists and criminal groups hiding in forests across the state.

He added that he remains in close contact with security commanders and has instructed them to leave no stone unturned in rescuing the victims and ensuring justice is served. “We understand the anxiety and pain this incident has caused, particularly to parents whose children were among those abducted.

"We are aware of the suffering and anxiety this incident has caused, especially for parents whose children were kidnapped."

He assured, “We stand with you at this difficult time and assure you that everything humanly and operationally possible will be done to secure their safe release.”

Additionally, Governor Alia reiterated his administration's commitment to bolster security in Benue, urging citizens to stay calm, remain alert, and support security agencies with credible information.

He stressed that the state will not yield to criminal activities, declaring, “We will continue to take decisive actions to protect lives and property.”
