William Fubara, a 100 level student at Madonna University in Okija, Anambra State, has died in response to allegations of frequent bullying and physical assault by classmates.
Fubara allegedly experienced frequent harassment over a period of months, according to tales circulating online and shared by friends. It is said that he was targeted because of his perceived feminine traits.
Although these reports are still unconfirmed, some sources also suggest that similar instances of intimidation and phone searches of students suspected of being gay had previously taken place in the dormitory setting.
The deceased's friends also claim to have messages, testimonials, and other personal stories that Fubara purportedly recorded prior to his death, describing his experiences and identifying people he thought were engaged in his harassment.
Although the specifics of those cases are yet unknown, it was also claimed that certain students had been reprimanded or suspended in the past due to allegations of harassment involving other students.
After experiencing serious health issues, including as recurrent seizures, Fubara was reportedly admitted to the hospital before being placed in intensive care, where he subsequently passed away.
Internal inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death are reportedly underway at the university.
