Thirteen suspects have been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command following the assault on a journalist in Port Harcourt, an incident that has drawn fresh attention to rising street crime in the Garrison axis.
Thirteen individuals were taken into custody by Rivers State Police Command officers in connection with an assault on a journalist in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The suspects are thought to be among the thieves that rob and harass people in the Garrison area of the state's Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.
Mr. Allwell Ene, a Classic FM correspondent who was in the neighborhood to look into criminal activity, was attacked by the suspects.
Olugenga Adepoju, the Commissioner of Police, began looking into the alleged attack and other criminal activity in the neighborhood after the incident.
However, 13 individuals were taken into custody after the investigation, said to Blessing Agabe, the command's public relations officer.
"The facts available indicate that one journalist, Mr. Allwell Ene, was attacked and physically assaulted by suspected hoodlums for video recording them while conducting a solo investigative activity in an area marked as a black spot, known for criminal activities and constantly raided by police," stated Agabe in a statement released yesterday in Port Harcourt.
The Olu-Obasanjo Division's Divisional Police Officer quickly dispatched personnel to the area to save the journalist after receiving the information.
Operatives of the command have been working together to conduct coordinated operations within the Olu-Obasanjo axis and surrounding regions in accordance with the Commissioner of Police's direction. Thirteen suspects have been taken into custody thus far.
The suspects are thought to be involved in a number of illegal acts, such as harassing law-abiding citizens and stealing phones. To guarantee that all of the offenders are prosecuted, investigations are continuing and efforts are being stepped up.
