A suspected cult clash in Agwan Jukun area of Makurdi has left at least three people dead, sparking panic and mass displacement in parts of Benue State.
In Agwan Jukun, a neighborhood of Makurdi in Benue State, a fight between alleged competing cult groups resulted in the deaths of at least three people.
Residents reported that the violence started on Sunday night and lasted until the early hours of Monday. It caused widespread fear and forced many individuals to leave their houses, and business operations were suddenly suspended.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants moved with seeming precision and targeted particular people when they assaulted the area at around 8 p.m.
When they got there, they immediately targeted specific individuals. A local who wished to remain anonymous stated, "It didn't look random at all; they knew exactly who they were after."
According to reports, the murders took place between Market Street and Wukari Street. Some locals think the attackers might have tracked their victims using local informants.
The operation implied that they possessed insider knowledge. Although they didn't appear to be from the area, they obviously had assistance, according to another report.
Tension was still high as of Monday, particularly in the vicinity of a mosque and the market area, where locals were still afraid of more assaults.
"Shops are still closed, and many people have left the area." Another resident said, "There's a lot of fear."
Some residents expressed new worries on Tuesday about a potential retaliatory attack, saying that groups of young people were spotted carrying firearms in public areas of the neighborhood.
As of the time this report was filed, DSP Udeme Edet, the Police Public Relations Officer, had not responded to questions or provided an update on the incident, therefore attempts to get a comment from her were futile.
