Authorities in Anambra State have launched an investigation into a disturbing case involving the alleged physical abuse of two young children, aged six and four.
Five defendants have been arraigned by the Anambra State Police Command before a Special Court in Awka for a variety of offenses involving rape, sexual assault, and child abuse.
A middle-aged father who has been having affairs with his daughter and infecting her with a dangerous viral illness is one of the suspects.
Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, released a press release on Wednesday stating that the suspects were brought before the court following the completion of investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department's operatives.
According to Ikenga, the suspects carried out the crime in several parts of the state, and the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, had described the case as heinous and unacceptable, reiterating the Command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, especially children, and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
"Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department have concluded investigations into several serious cases of sexual and child abuse-related offenses, including that of a father who has been having an affair with his daughter and inflicted a serious viral disease on her," the statement stated.
Today, May 6, 2026, the Special Court in Awka will arraign the five accused. The case specifics are listed below.
On April 22, 2026, Ogbunike Police Division Headquarters reported a case of defilement of a 16-year-old girl to the State Criminal Investigation Department's Gender Unit.
According to the preliminary inquiry, the victim was allegedly attacked by the suspect, Chukwuemeka Chidiebere, a 26-year-old male security guard at the nearby estate, when she was en route to see a friend.
He allegedly forced her into an unfinished building on the estate, where he had illicit sexual knowledge of her. The suspect has made a confessional statement in the interim.
Ikenga further stated that on April 23, 2026, a case of defilement of an 11-year-old girl was passed from Neni Police Divisional Headquarters to the operatives.
The 36-year-old male suspect, Uchenna Muojama, is accused of luring the woman into his barbershop so that he may have unlawful sexual relations with her. The workers have additionally obtained a medical report for the court proceedings,” he added.
A similar incident occurred on April 21, 2025, when a defilement case was transferred from Central Police Station Awka. Chukwudi Nwayata, a 52-year-old male suspect, used an 11-year-old girl's mental state to lure her to his home and obtain unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim.
Additionally, an incest case with a 20-year-old victim was transferred from Oko Police Station on the same day, April 23, 2026.
The victim was allegedly sexually involved with the 46-year-old suspect, Rapuruchukwu Ezenandu, since she was 17 years old. The victim tested positive for HIV during a medical visit, which led to the case's discovery. The suspect has admitted guilt.
In another development, on April 28, 2026, two children, Echetuna Ezenwanne (six years old) and Chikaima Ezenwanne (four years old), were allegedly severely physically abused by a female suspect named Eucharia Ezenwanne, allegedly using a wire to cause injuries.
The suspect claimed to have taken the kids from an Onitsha motherless babies' shelter.
