Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed a surprising royal lineage, tracing his ancestry to King Kosoko, a 19th-century ruler of Lagos who resisted early British colonial forces
Adekunle Gold, a Nigerian singer, has disclosed that he is descended from King Kosoko of Lagos, a 19th-century ruler who opposed British colonial forces when they initially arrived in Nigeria.
In an interview that was posted on YouTube on Thursday, Gold revealed the information on Great Day Houston, a morning program on KHOU 11 television in Houston, Texas.
Regarding his regal ancestry, he said that his ancestor battled the British when they first arrived in Nigeria through Lagos, was banished, and then triumphantly returned.
"My ancestor was formerly the ruler of Lagos. He goes by King Kosoko. When the British initially arrived in Nigeria through Lagos to try to seize our belongings, he engaged in combat, fled into exile, returned, and then still won,” he said.
Gold was born in Lagos and is a member of the Yoruba tribe.
The musician also disclosed that God gave him his stage name during a speech at church.
He claimed to have been looking for one and to have prayed to God about it before receiving the answer during a sermon at church.
He declared, "I told God, I need a name."
He claimed that during the service, a speaker used the same word three times, which he interpreted as a sign from God.
"I suddenly realized that it had to have been God. That's your name, God told me at that moment," he remarked.
Gold claimed that he decided on the name right away.
“I said, okay, you know what, just make it Adekunle Gold, and it’s very befitting of me,” he said.
