Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has paid tribute to Nigerian nurses and midwives for their commitment and sacrifices in the country's healthcare system, marking this year's World Nurses Day.

In a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, Obi celebrated nurses as the backbone of Nigeria's health sector, emphasizing the critical roles they play in healthcare delivery nationwide.

He noted that his longstanding support for nursing and midwifery schools across the country reflects his deep appreciation for the profession's importance to national development, adding that he has visited and supported various such institutions in different parts of Nigeria over the years.

The former Anambra State governor also acknowledged the extremely challenging conditions under which Nigerian nurses operate, citing factors such as poor working environments, inadequate equipment, and overwhelmingly high patient-to-nurse ratios.

He praised their resilience and dignity in the face of both physical and mental pressures, crediting them with keeping the health sector functional despite these hardships.

Obi also recognized the growing global footprint of Nigerian nurses, highlighting their contributions to research and clinical excellence on the international stage, and describing their achievements as a source of national pride.

He rounded off his message with a pledge of continued support for the profession, promising that if given the opportunity to lead, he would prioritize investment in nursing education and training to ensure Nigerian nurses remain competitive globally.

He reaffirmed his vision of building a country where the hard work and sacrifices of healthcare workers are genuinely valued and rewarded.
