The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has said that food prices could fall by the next harvest season if governments take concrete steps to improve security and reduce the cost of agricultural production.

The Deputy Chairman of AFAN's Lagos State Chapter, Mr. Shakin Agbayewa, made this known during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

He noted that staple foods such as rice, yams, cassava, and garri would become more affordable if farmers were able to cultivate their land safely and access farm inputs at reduced costs.

Agbayewa identified insecurity, high fertilizer prices, rising fuel costs, and expensive farming operations as the primary factors driving current food inflation.

He stressed that the elevated costs of cultivation, transportation, and security are ultimately transferred to consumers in the form of higher food prices.

He called on governments at all levels to take deliberate and purposeful action in support of farmers, including the provision of subsidized inputs, improved rural road infrastructure, irrigation facilities, and access to affordable credit.

He also advocated for stronger collaboration between governments and farmers' associations to develop practical, state-specific solutions.

Agbayewa expressed optimism that a boost in agricultural output during the coming farming season would naturally help ease pressure on market prices.

He added that Nigeria possesses sufficient land and human resources to achieve food self-sufficiency, provided that the right policies are put in place, and described sustained support for farmers as the most viable path to lower food prices and long-term economic stability.
