Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar's bid for a third term in the Senate has encountered significant opposition, with a section of his senatorial district publicly pushing back against his re-election ambitions.
At a press conference held in Ilorin on Tuesday, the National President of the Patigi Emirate Development Union (PEDU), Salihu Bologi Umar, expressed strong concern over reports that the serving senator intends to seek another term representing the Kwara North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
The group outlined its position clearly, calling for an end to third-term representation, respect for the district's established zoning tradition, and justice for Patigi Local Government Area.
It maintained that two terms are sufficient for any single representative and declared that it is now Patigi's turn to produce the senator for the district.
Bologi emphasized that Kwara North belongs equally to all its constituent communities, and that no individual or local government area should be allowed to dominate the political direction of the district at the expense of fairness and democratic justice.
He urged all political actors, stakeholders, traditional institutions, youth groups, and community leaders across the district to uphold the principles of equity, dialogue, and mutual respect in the interest of regional peace and political stability.
The group warned that any attempt to deny Patigi Emirate its rightful opportunity to produce the next senator could prompt stakeholders and supporters within the emirate to explore alternative political platforms.
It clarified, however, that this position is not a threat but a sincere appeal for justice and inclusion.
Bologi explained that for decades, the communities of Kwara North have maintained a respected rotational zoning arrangement, under which senatorial representation rotates among constituent local government areas after every two terms or eight years.
He described this arrangement as a cornerstone of political harmony and inter-community trust within the district.
On this basis, PEDU declared that it is both justifiable and appropriate for the 2027 Kwara North senatorial mandate to be ceded to Patigi Local Government Area, in keeping with the long-standing and widely acknowledged zoning understanding.
