The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended a man identified as Bala Yusuf, originally from Dutse Local Government Area in Jigawa State, over an alleged attempt to kill a commercial driver and make away with his vehicle.

The arrest was confirmed in an official statement released on Thursday by the command's spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib.

According to the statement, the suspect had hired the driver to take him from Abuja to Jos.

Upon arriving at their destination, he reportedly convinced the driver to extend the trip to Bauchi, claiming he needed to visit family members there.

Once they arrived in Bauchi, the suspect allegedly mixed sleeping pills into the driver's food in a calculated move to incapacitate him, after which he attempted to steal the vehicle, estimated to be worth around ₦5 million.

His plan was foiled when he was caught in possession of the vehicle before he could escape. The drugged driver was subsequently rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for urgent medical attention.

The police command stated that investigations are still ongoing to establish the full details of the incident, after which the suspect will be formally charged in court.
