The Kwara State Government has cautioned residents to stop disposing of waste indiscriminately on road medians and other unauthorized locations, warning that such behavior poses significant environmental and public health dangers that could trigger disease outbreaks.

The warning was issued on Friday through a statement by the Press Secretary of the Ministry, Muritala Shakirat, on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, following a review of reports submitted by Environmental Health Officers and the ministry's task force.

The commissioner stated that the renewed enforcement campaign was designed to improve public health standards, prevent flooding caused by blocked drainage systems, and promote a cleaner living environment across the state.

She noted that environmental officials had stepped up monitoring activities within the Ilorin metropolis, with particular focus on illegal waste disposal and noise pollution.

As part of the ongoing crackdown, the enforcement team sealed at least two facilities found to be generating excessive and unbearable noise levels, while six individuals were arrested for dumping refuse on road medians.

Hajia Buge described indiscriminate waste disposal as a persistent environmental challenge with the potential to contaminate surroundings and expose residents to serious health hazards.

She warned that anyone found violating environmental regulations would face the full consequences of the law, stressing that the government would not condone actions that threaten public safety and environmental sustainability.

The commissioner also called for greater public awareness of existing environmental regulations, particularly permissible noise levels during nighttime hours, noting that the warning was especially relevant during festive periods when celebrations tend to increase both noise pollution and waste generation.

She reaffirmed the state government's commitment to building a cleaner, safer, and healthier Kwara State, while appreciating those already complying with the rules and appealing to others to cooperate with the government for the collective benefit of all residents.
