The World Bank was forced to disable comments on its Instagram page after Nigerians overwhelmed the platform with messages demanding that the organization stop a proposed $1.25 billion loan to Nigeria.

The online protest was driven by growing public anxiety over Nigeria's rapidly expanding national debt, which has surged from N49.85 trillion to N159.28 trillion since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office a rise that many Nigerians feel makes taking on additional borrowing irresponsible.
