The Federal Government has completed and formally handed over new Veterinary Primary Health Centres in Lagos and Ogun states as part of efforts to strengthen animal healthcare services across the country.

The facilities are situated in Epe, Lagos, and Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, and form part of a broader plan by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to establish 774 such centres across all local government areas in Nigeria.

During the handover event in Epe, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, who was represented by Dr. Alao Mitchell, stated that the initiative was designed to make veterinary services more accessible to farmers, while also enhancing disease prevention, monitoring, and control.

The programme is also expected to boost livestock productivity and contribute to national food security.

The ministry's Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Henrietta Okokon, disclosed online that the project is being rolled out in phases across 20 states.

So far, seven out of a planned 21 model veterinary hospitals have been completed in states including Sokoto, Niger, Enugu, Ondo, Borno, Adamawa, and Edo, with another 14 still under construction.

Okokon added that the government is partnering with state governments and private sector players through a Public-Private Partnership arrangement to ensure the long-term sustainability of the centres.

The facilities are intended to offer affordable animal healthcare to livestock farmers, particularly smallholder producers who typically have limited access to veterinary support.

Within its first two years of operation, the initiative is projected to serve more than 450,000 livestock value chain clusters.
