The Lagos State Government has banned the carrying of goods and heavy luggage on regulated public transport buses across the state, with the directive set to take effect from June 1, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, through its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, on Tuesday.
According to the agency, the decision followed growing complaints and operational challenges linked to the use of passenger buses for transporting goods, a practice that has been affecting passenger comfort, safety and service efficiency.
The ban was agreed upon during a strategic meeting between LAMATA and bus company operators, where all parties resolved that the practice needed to be stopped in order to create a more efficient and sustainable transport system.
LAMATA warned that enforcement would be strict and without exception. Any bus driver caught transporting goods after the directive takes effect will face immediate dismissal and blacklisting.
Similarly, any terminal or ground staff, including LAMATA's own personnel, found assisting in loading goods onto regulated buses will be summarily removed from service.
The agency maintained a zero tolerance stance on non-compliance and urged commuters, transport operators, terminal officials and the general public to fully adhere to the new rule and make alternative arrangements for moving goods. LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer, more reliable and passenger-friendly transport system across Lagos State.
