The Inspector-General of Police has made a new statement about one of the things he has achieved with the Nigerian Police during his tenure.

Solomon Arase

Mr. Solomon Arase, the Inspector General of Police, has said his resolve to stamp out what he called “barracks mentality” from the police rank and file contributed to the success the force.

Mr. Arase said this in Enugu at the commissioning of 50 units of a 100-flat housing estate for police inspectors, and their rank and file, when they retire from service.

The property was named after the former IGP, Ogbonnaya Onovo.

Commissioning the Police Housing Estate, Mr. Arase said when he became the IGP a year ago, he swore to change the perception the public had about the force by improving their welfare.

He said it was the inspectors and the rank and file that made the police thick and there was need to make them feel happy.

The IGP said he also determined to promote the junior officers as and when due, saying he had fulfilled that pledge and that today, “there is no constable in the Force”.

“When I became the IG a year ago, I decided to change the perception of the people against the police. The inspectors and the rank and file are the ones that make the police thick. I said that I would promote them when they are due and today, there are no constables in the Force,” Mr. Arase said.

Mr. Arase said in order to remove the “barracks mentality” from police personnel, 30% of the housing units were allocated to the civilian population so that they would mingle with everybody.
