A Nigerian pastor and musical artist, Dolapo Lawal, has faced heavy backlash online after making controversial comments about Arsenal FC and its supporters in a clip that went viral on social media.
In the video, the pastor declared that Arsenal would never win the league title, claiming he did not need any prophecy to know the club was cursed. He went further by advising women against dating Arsenal supporters, describing it as a bad sign.
The remarks triggered widespread outrage among football fans and social media users, many of whom accused the cleric of using the pulpit for unnecessary mockery.
Several online users called for an apology, with one demanding that Arsenal fans storm his church in their jerseys and insist he apologise at the same altar where he made the comments.
Others said they would respond with heavy banter before entertaining any apology. Some critics argued that preachers should focus on delivering spiritual messages rather than emotional football commentary, while others described the remarks as a disgrace to the faith and questioned his authority to pronounce curses on an entire fanbase.
Following Arsenal's Premier League title triumph, the pastor released an apology video in which he admitted the comments were all banter and congratulated the club.
He also reversed his earlier advice to women, encouraging them to date Arsenal supporters and describing them as winners.
He even announced a special thanksgiving service on Sunday and invited Arsenal fans to come and celebrate together.
